PS5 controller drift: why the stick moves by itself and how to fix it
Why PS5, Xbox and Joy-Con sticks end up drifting, the temporary fixes, and the only lasting repair.
Updated
What is drift?
Drift is when the controller sends movement while you’re not touching the stick: the camera slowly turns, the character walks by itself, the cursor slides in menus. It affects every controller with classic sticks: the PS5 DualSense, Xbox controllers, Switch Joy-Cons.
Why it happens
A classic stick measures its position with potentiometers: a small resistive track rubbed by a contact. With use, the track wears and dust gets in; the reading drifts and the controller thinks you’re pushing the stick. It’s mechanical wear, not a software problem.
What you can try
These tricks can reduce drift for a few days, but they don’t fix the wear: it comes back.
- Reset the controller: small button on the back of the DualSense, press for 5 seconds with a paperclip.
- Update the controller from the console settings.
- Blow compressed air around the stick while rotating it.
The lasting repair: replace the stick module
On the DualSense, the stick module is soldered to the controller board. The repair is to desolder it and solder in a new module: the controller gets back the precision of a new one.
At Shuja Express in Villefranche-sur-Saône, the replacement costs €29 for one stick and €45 for both. Xbox controllers, Joy-Cons and the Switch Pro Controller are repaired on quote. Drop-off by appointment or by post.
