PS5 “No signal”: how to tell if the HDMI port is broken

The tests to do before assuming a fault, the signs that your PS5’s HDMI port is damaged, and what the repair costs.

Tests to do first

A black screen doesn’t always mean the console is broken. First rule out the simple causes:

  1. 1Try another HDMI cableIdeally the original cable or a certified HDMI 2.1 cable. A damaged cable is enough to kill the picture.
  2. 2Try another inputPlug the console into another HDMI port on the TV and select the right source with the remote.
  3. 3Try another screenIf you can, test the PS5 on another TV or monitor.
  4. 4Start in Safe ModeWith the console off, hold the power button until the second beep (about 7 seconds), connect the controller by USB and choose “Change Video Output”. If the picture comes back, it was a video setting.

Signs of a broken HDMI port

  • The connector is loose or looks pushed into the console.
  • One or more pins are bent, blackened or missing (look with a torch).
  • The picture appears then cuts out when you touch the cable.
  • The cable goes in badly, or too easily.
  • The problem started after a fall, a move or a yanked cable.

HDMI port or HDMI chip?

If the port is intact but the picture doesn’t come back, the fault may be the HDMI chip (the “retimer”) right behind the port on the motherboard. It can be damaged by a power surge or a ripped-out port. Only a diagnosis inside the console can tell.

How much does the repair cost?

At Shuja Express in Villefranche-sur-Saône, a PS5 HDMI port replacement costs €69, parts and labour included (PS5 standard, Digital, Slim and Pro). The port is desoldered and a new one is soldered to the motherboard, then picture and sound are tested. If the fault is the HDMI chip, you get a quote before any work.

You can drop the console off by appointment or send it by post from anywhere in France. Diagnosis is done within 24 business hours of receipt.

How to stop it happening again

  • Always unplug the HDMI cable before moving the console.
  • Leave some slack in the cable: it mustn’t pull on the port.
  • Never force a cable that won’t go in properly.
